The 5GW of the Orcish Hoardes
With the confirmation of a Samuel Alito being a sure-thing, Iran acting like a typical realist power, and "Science" magazines reading like science fiction, life is normal. Perhaps too normal.
But have no fear! When real blog politics is boring, we have imaginary blog politics!
"Roleplay or Landgrab? As the Elf Council Debates, only the Orcs Know for Sure!!!," by Urizenus, Second Life Herald, 20 December 2005, http://www.dragonscoveherald.com/blog/index.php?p=1059#more-1059.
"It seems to me that the Soviets used 5GW...," by ZF, tdaxp, 17 January 2005, http://tdaxp.blogspirit.com/archive/2005/07/20/dreaming-5th-generation-war.html#c487393.
First, the story:
In the hall of mirrors that is Second Life, what does it mean when a band of plug ugly Orcs invite the peaceful elven folk to a game of combat roleplay? Is it all in fun, or does something more sinister lurk beneath the surface? Elven Queen Forcythia, seeing the good in all, says it is all in fun. But wise – some would say jaded – Elven King Wayfinder is not so sanguine, as documents exposing a deep rift in the Elven council were leaked to the Herald:
"Role play? What role play? Don’t buy that story. The Orcs are trying to take over Elven Lands, pure and simple. Forcythia is always ready to believe the best in everyone. Don’t buy the Orc claim that this is role play. Elven are not so easily fooled." –Wayfinder
When the battle finally took place, of course the servers were overloaded, prims vanished, and the Elvenlands server had to be reset. Gosh, now there’s a surprise.
This reminds me of ZF's comment from a post on SecretWar
It seems to me that the Soviets used 5GW, as you descibe it here, against us for a long time.
They directed and often financed thousands of "useful idiots" both in support of their explicit goals and to resist identification of their efforts by stridently proclaiming that all the USSR sought was 'peaceful coexistence", etc. Surely the objective was to create the conditions for a win or a series of wins on their side, while convincing us that we were not even involved in a serious conflict and that those who claimed we were should be called out (just as Winston Churchill was) as "warmongers".
So the Orcish Hoardes in Second Life, like the Soviet Horde during the Cold War, were trying to deform a conflict into a 5GW. Is this interpretation consistent with 5GW Theory?
Even if both cases do show an attempted phase change into 5GW, they are attempts to transition out of different styles of war. The Soviet conflict from the early Cold War to detente was a 4GW - mass ideological conflict that emphasizes moral warfare. The Orcish attacks, by contrast, appear to be a Pre-Modern War, based on sheiks and super-empowered non-ideological individuals.
Could Orcs be 5GWarriors? Makes as much sense as rock babes.

Shay,
Thanks!
Second Life Herald is hypnotic. I found it by accident, but the stories are fascinating
Just take a look at three:
From the educational:
http://www.secondlifeherald.com/slh/2006/01/wired_news_cove.html
To FLN-style puritanism
http://www.secondlifeherald.com/slh/2006/01/crew_88_vows_to.html
To books:
http://www.secondlifeherald.com/slh/2006/01/buy_buy_buy_ube.html
Is it blogroll-worthy? I don't know.
But I just can't look away...
