Dreaming of a Lost Empire - or - the Germans are Planning Something
Catholicgauze found a nifty site of old road maps -- including some nice German ones...
From the 1950s!
And 1970s!
A more serious point: one hears complaints about supposed Japanese "remilitarization," but Japan wasn't mapping her lost Empire a generation after she lost it.

Oooh. Cool find. Don't blame the Germans though, their land was stolen after WWI unjustly and they just want it back. I love meeting older people here who tell me they're from "the east." When you ask "East Germany?" they say no and smile. Then the great conversation begins. Chirol's future father-in-law is from the Sudetenland!

Definitely, map props to Catholicgauze.
I remember (I think it was in the Atlantic Monthly) reading an article which described the hopeful 1950s-is or refering to the GDR as "Middle Germany"
One wonders how better history could have turned out if Wilhelm II would have concentrated on building a German nation (that is, Union with the Empire of Austria), and letting the Balkans fend for themselves.
Or, even better, not dismissing Bismarck and concentrating on building a european economic community

Hmm...Interesting... Any chance that novelist Joe Buff has seen these?
